The performance of wingback Robin Gosens was a positive note in Inter’s 4-2 friendly loss to Villarreal, but the team as a whole was not up to par, particularly defensively.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, who note the German’s display as the standout aspect of a team performance which still looked sloppy and off the pace defensively.

Gosens has had a mixed preseason at best, with the main issue for him having been the muscle problem that ruled him out of a couple of friendlies ahead of a season where he will be expected to hit the ground running as the long-term replacement for Ivan Perisic.

The 28-year-old appears to have ended his preseason in a high note, however, putting in a shift down the left which showed much of why the Nerazzurri signed him, and capping off his night with an assist for Romelu Lukaku.

Elsewhere in the team, however, midfielder Kristjan Asllani had a mixed evening at best including a couple bad giveaways, whilst the defense still looked out of form.
