Former Inter winger Andy Van der Meyde has encouraged Inter not to sell fellow Dutchman Denzel Dumfries this summer, according to a report in the Italian print media today.

Speaking during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Andy Van der Meyde showed how highly he rates Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries and how he thinks the former PSV Eindhoven player should not be allowed to leave.

He explained that it is a source of pride for the Dutchman to be playing for Inter and to be chased by a team like Chelsea: “It’s a pride to see him at Inter and for him to be wanted by a top club like Chelsea.”

He then added what he would say if he was in charge of Inter when a bid comes in for Denzel Dumfries, as well as what he would say to the player about the possibility of pushing for a move.

“Just one thing, to say ‘no thanks’. And to Denzel: ‘You stay here with us because we need you to win the Scudetto’. Seen from the outside, he is one of Inzaghi’s most strategic players, one of the best in Europe in his role. Denzel is someone who believes and never gives up.”

Andy Van der Meyde explained that he always thought Italy would be a very good destination for Denzel Dumfries when the player was still in the Netherlands.

“I always thought Italy was perfect for him: he’s a hard worker and gives positivity, he never stops running and you can’t stop him.

“He puts intensity into the game and even in the national team he is often one of the most dangerous. And then in Serie A I have seen him grow in tactics, he is more careful in defence and never misses a cross or makes a useless play up front.

“He doesn’t have to leave now, the team will be even fiercer: Lukaku wants to prove he is the best centre forward in the world and he will drag everything and everyone with him.”

In terms of the price tag, Andy Van der Meyde seems to think that Inter are asking for too little with €50 million.

“How much is he worth? We start at €80m! But I hope we don’t stop there first. Where do you find another one like that on the wing, especially at the end of the market?”
