Inter still haven’t fully given up on signing Borussia Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji, but at the moment Francesco Acerbi is definitely the favourite to arrive as the final defensive signing of the summer.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the Nerazzurri are still holding out hope that there will be an opening for them to sign Akanji although Lazio defender Acerbi looks to be the most realistic option by far.

Inter have not yet wrapped up their final piece of major incoming business for the summer transfer window, a defender capable of replacing Andrea Ranocchia and backing up Stefan de Vrij at the heart of the back three, and it could still be a few more days.

Akanji has been a priority name on the Nerazzurri’s list and they have not totally given up although it looks as though an agreement with Dortmund could be out of reach, meaning that Acerbi is becoming more and more the likely final arrival of the summer.
