Inter’s 3-1 loss to Lazio in Serie A exposed two major problems with the team as presently constituted, namely the limitations to coach Simone Inzaghi’s tactical approach and the inability of striker Romelu Lukaku to win Serie A for the team as he did two seasons ago.
This according to today;’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, who argue that Inzaghi and Lukaku failed to live up to expectations on a night that raised serious questions about the entire team’s capacity to fight for the Scudetto.
Inzaghi made some unexpected decisions in yesterday’s match, not least leaving Hakan Calhanoglu on the bench to rely on the physicality of Roberto Gagliardini in midfield.
The coach’s ideas, not least the selection of Gagliardini, virtually all backfired, raising fresh doubts about whether he can evolve tactically to expand the limits of what is possible for this Inter team.
Meanwhile, Lukaku is a player who returned with the expectation that he could be the difference-maker in the title race as he was two seasons ago, even despite his poor spell at Chelsea.
However, the 29-year-old looked much closer to the player he had been during his ill-fated period back in the Premier League, and there will be greater and greater doubts about whether he is actually able to be the decisive player that he had been under Antonio Conte.
