Inter are looking for certainty surrounding the starting spot in goal for the future rather than for the rotation between Samir Handanovic and Andre Onana to drag on for much longer into the season.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, who report that the Nerazzurri want to clearly establish the identity of the starting goalkeeper in order to introduce consistency and stability into the team.

Onana’s impressive debut in Wednesday’s Champions League loss to Bayern Munich was enough to suggest that the Cameroonian had repaid coach Simone Inzaghi’s trust and that he could already be set for a more prominent role in the team.

However, captain Handanovic is reportedly set to return to the starting eleven for tomorrow’s Serie A clash with Torino, whilst Onana could then be back in the Nerazzurri’s second Champions League group stage match against Viktoria Plzen.

The feeling within the club is that since the pair each bring different playing styles to the team, alternating between them in goal would force the defense to adapt to their respective strengths and weaknesses.

Onana is more aggressive in coming out to claim crosses and set pieces into the box than Handanovic is, meaning that the defenders will tend to position themselves differently in defensive situations depending on who is behind them.

Moreover, the Cameroonian has a more accurate long kick than Handanovic does, potentially a useful weapon particularly when striker Romelu Lukaku is back in the team, and so the way that the team attacks could also be affected by his presence in goal.

Accordingly, the club feels that a decision must be made once and for all, more or less, on which keeper will be starting the vast majority of games going forward, so that the roles of all the outfield players can be more clearly identified and patterns of play can be more consistent.
