The “Yes to Meazza” committee held a rally in opposition to the plans of Inter and AC Milan to demolish the San Siro to make way for a new stadium in the city of Milan.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that there was a silent protest in the San Siro area with a number of prominent citizens of Milan making their opposition known to tearing down the famous stadium.
Inter and Milan have been pushing ahead with their plans for a new stadium which they see as necessary to modernize their infrastructure and increase revenues, and demolishing the existing San Siro looks to be a necessary condition for building it within the city limits of Milan proper.
The clubs have taken a big step towards potentially starting construction after getting full approval of revised plans from the city council, with the public debate set to start later this month around the issue.
However, the opposition remains to the clubs’ plans, with the “Yes to Meazza” committee making clear their view that demolishing the San Siro would be like demolishing “half of the Duomo cathedral.”
