Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu feels that the team gave a much-needed indication for their future by beating Barcelona yesterday evening.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset after the match, the 28-year-old emphasized the importance of the result for the team and the fans.

Inter have had to endure a very tough couple of months to begin the season.

For the players, the fans, and everyone around the club, any positivity or momentum has always seemed to be erased by a bad result just around the corner.

Therefore, a statement win against a team like Barcelona will have been a breath of fresh air in the context of this start to the campaign.

There is still plenty of work for Calhanoglu and his teammates to do.

However, the overall impression is a much more positive one, with the team having given a demonstration that they are not yet decisively knocked out.

“It was very important for us to win today,” Calhanoglu said, “we had to send a message, especially to the fans who are always behind us closely.”

“They gave us a big hand,” he said of the fans of the San Siro, “we showed that we deserve this win.”

“This match can give us a spark, we want to go on like this.”

Of his goal, the Turk said that “For me it’s an important goal, I haven’t scored in the Champions League since 2016, I’ve been out a lot and I’ve worked a lot.”

As far as the team’s prospects of qualifying for the knockout rounds from here, Calhanoglu said that “We have to stay calm and take it one match at a time.”
