Inter legend Beppe Bergomi has said that Samir Handanovic is a leader but it is time for Andre Onana to be trusted with the number one spot, according to a report in the Italian media.

Speaking during an interview on Sky Sport Italia, via FCInternews, Beppe Bergomi explained that he now feels it is time for Andre Onana to be made the main goalkeeper at Inter.

So far since his arrival, the Cameroonian goalkeeper has only played in the three Champions League group games whilst Samir Handanovic has been starting all of the Serie A matches.

Beppe Bergomi clearly has great admiration for Samir Handanovic but he feels the time for the handover has come.

“I’ve never been unbalanced, but it’s time to put trust in Onana.

“Handanovic, I have always defended him and I will always defend him, he is a leader within the locker room but we need a shake-up.”

Speaking more generally bout the recent 1-0 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League, Beppe Bergomi said that it showed the Nerazzurri can soak up pressure and win games without dominating the ball.

“Inter knew how to suffer, this is enough to describe the performance against Barcelona.

“Before it was impatient, they didn’t want to be there to suffer and to have the tenacity to bring home the result.

“This is an imperfect squad: it is 17th in terms of dribbles attempted, it could not restart because it had no fast forwards and Lukaku was missing.

“You have to be able to suffer and make up for that through determination, waiting for certain players to come back.”
