Italian journalist Marco Bucciantini believes that if Inter coach Simone Inzaghi had selected Samir Handanovic to start in goal against Sassuolo, the question regarding the starting keeper would have been left unclear.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Bucciantini argued that the coach managed to clarify the matter significantly so that uncertainty isn’t left in the air.
At the start of the season the hierarchy in Inter’s goal seemed clear, with Handanovic still ahead of summer arrival Andre Onana, at least in the league.
However, Onana’s displays in the Champions League led many to expect for the Cameroonian to be given a chance in Serie A.
Inzaghi took the decision to hand Onana the start rather than continuing with Handanovic against the Neroverdi.
This seemed to go with the prevailing trend of the 26-year-old taking one step at a time into a starting role, whereas if Handanovic had started again it could have led to the sense that the coach was interrupting Onana’s path and being indecisive.
“If Simone Inzaghi had decided to start with Samir Handanovic, it would have left the matter uncertain,” Bucciantini said.
“Instead, he chose to start Onana which really put the point on it,” he added.
