Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi feels that Lautaro Martinez forms a much more effective strike partnership with Romelu Lukaku than with Edin Dzeko.
Speaking on Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Bergomi gave his thoughts on the different dynamics for the Argentine depending on who he’s playing alongside.
Martinez has played alongside a number of different forwards since joining Inter, particularly after Antonio Conte took over in the summer of 2019 and brought with him a two-striker system.
Under Conte the 25-year-old largely played alongside Lukaku and occasionally Alexis Sanchez.
After Simone Inzaghi replaced Conte, he kept the two-striker system, but Lukaku’s departure meant that summer arrivals Dzeko and Joaquin Correa were the Argentine’s new partners in crime, particularly Dzeko.
Now Lukaku is back, but has been injured for much of the campaign, and so the combination of Dzeko and Martinez has continued to be used regularly.
“In my opinion how he plays depends a lot on who he plays alongside,” Bergomi said.
“Dzeko is a great player but he doesn’t combine well with Lautaro.”
“In my view he’s perfect alongside Lukaku,” he added of the Argentine.
“I remember the seasons the two of them played together, Toro was more consistent,” Bergomi noted.
“Even yesterday he created chances, he always gives his all with his performances, he’s generous, but the players around him help him in different ways.”
