Former Inter goalkeeper Sebastien Frey has said it is right for Andre Onana to be number one goalkeeper but the situation should be explained to Samir Handanovic, according to a report in the Italian media.

Speaking during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Sebastien Frey discussed the changing goalkeeper situation at Inter.

Samir Handanovic has been playing all of the Serie A matches this season and Andre Onana has been starting the Champions League games.

Since last weekend though, it seems that Andre Onana is now the number one goalkeeper in all competitions except, assumedly, the Coppa Italia.

Sebastien Frey explained that he is in agreement with Simone Inzaghi’s call to use Andre Onana ad the main goalkeeper but he feels that the situation must be explained to Samir Handanovic fully.

“Change was needed. But you have to respect a player who did so many years at Inter, who gave his soul for this team and who was a great goalkeeper like Handanovic.

“And he had a great attitude when he sat on the bench, he always cheered the team on as captain.

“You need respect in these choices, you have to explain well what the situation is. Otherwise, you do yourself harm. Handanovic has not been very calm lately and I’m sorry.

“When the situation is not clear, psychologically it’s hard. Today it’s right to give Onana space, with him the team gets results.

“Today it would be disrespectful to take him off. He has played three games in a row between the league and the Champions League, the team is doing better in all respects: I’m not a coach, but if I were I wouldn’t touch anything.

“Now Inter are going, they could have won yesterday and they wouldn’t have stolen anything. It was a strong and important signal.”

He also talked about why he thinks the Cameroonian is such a good goalkeeper and is worthy of being Inter’s number one.

“I think Onana has fitted in very well, he is charismatic on the pitch: he shouts, he has a lot of desire.

“Onana conveys something strong. I’ll give you an example: when Inter score a goal, he pulls the team together. It’s the attitude of someone who wants to win.

“That’s the positive side and that’s what Inter needed right now.”
