Referee Juan Luca Sacchi marred an otherwise good officiating display in Inter’s Serie A win over Salernitana yesterday by failing to send off Granata defender Flavius Daniluc.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, who argue that the 21-year-old Austrian should have been sent off for a clear second yellow.
Sacchi looked like he was not going to whistle for fouls too often yesterday afternoon, as he let physical challenges go unless there was no question that they were fouls.
The referee did book Daniluc early on, however, with the 21-year-old theoretically walking a tightrope for the rest of the match.
This didn’t stop the Austrian from hauling down Inter striker Lautaro Martinez in the 37th minute.
Sacchi awarded a free kick on the edge of the box to the Nerazzurri, but for the Corriere Salernitana and Daniluc got off easy.
Daniluc hardly made an effort for the ball and took Martinez right off the ground with the force of his challenge, and in the view of the Corriere there was little excuse for it not to result in a booking and therefore a sending off.
