Urban planner Giuseppe Bonomi feels that the right capacity for Inter and AC Milan’s new stadium is 65,000 based on the attendances currently at the San Siro.
Speaking at the public debate around the new stadium, as reported by Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport in today’s print edition, Bonomi explained that given that some season ticket holders didn’t attend, the “full house” of Inter’s Serie A clash with Salernitana over the weekend was actually that number.
The capacity of the San Siro is in excess of 75,000, and on Sunday a sold out crowd recorded 75,542 tickets purchased for Inter’s Serie A clash with Salernitana.
Given this, there could be concerned that if the new stadium is built with a lower capacity than the San Siro, it will not be adequate.
However, as Bonomi explained, the reality is that, once season ticket holders not in attendance is factored in, the actual crowds at many sold out matches are right around 65,000.
“There was a full house this weekend, but in reality 62,000 fans were in attendance, including the four thousand or so who’d travelled from Salerno.”
“We believe that the ideal capacity is 60-65,000,” said the urban planner representing the clubs.
