Former Inter, Roma, Bologna, and Salernitana Sporting Director Walter Sabatini feels that the difficulties of Nerazzurri owners Suning are greater than what he’d have expected.

Speaking to Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, the former executive looked back on his own time at Inter compared to now, and also praised the impact of current Nerazzurri CEO Beppe Marotta.

Sabatini had a tumultuous time at Inter, having been appointed by Suning as Sporting Director of both the Nerazzurri and Jiangsu Suning simultaneously in 2017.

The experienced football executive lasted less than a year in the dual roles, although for his part he bears no real ill will.

Sabatini had experience working with Suning earlier on in their footballing project at Inter.

For him, it has been a surprise to see the struggles that the Chinese company have had with running Inter since the start of the pandemic.

Asked if he still feels any resentment regarding his time at Inter, Sabatini called it “Just water under the bridge.”

“The problems they have are now more serious and I wouldn’t have expected that, despite some sign, particularly because Zhang is generous.”

Sabtaini continued, “But the team won’t receive too many shockwaves from that, Beppe Marotta can soundproof things so that the players aren’t affected in training and matches.”

“They are recovering, after a bad period that was mostly psychological,” he said of the Nerazzurri’s start to the campaign.
