Inter are still letting in too many goals in away matches, but are now crucially showing the ability to react to them.
This is the assessment in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, who suggest that the defensive lapses are still there, although the mentality has decisively changed.
Inter’s 4-3 away win against Fiorentina was certainly not a demonstration of defensive solidity from the Nerazzurri.
At a raucous Stadio Artemio Franchi, Inter let a 2-0 lead slip to find themselves drawing 2-2 during the second half.
However, the team reacted to go 3-2 up through a Lautaro Martinez, although once again showed their lack of defensive solidity away from home to get pegged back to 3-3 late on.
Instead of simply accepting the draw, however, the Nerazzurri found a way to score in stoppage time to take home all three points.
The defensive issues that saw the Nerazzurri unable to calmly see out a lead against a strong opponent away from home remain a serious worry.
However, in the meantime, the capacity to respond mentally on the pitch is a big improvement over the way the team crumbled in these kinds of situations earlier on in the campaign.
