Legendary former Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio feels that Inter have changed the entire way they defend under Simone Inzaghi, and not necessarily for the better.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster Rai Radio, Marchisio also spoke about the possible effect that the transfer rumours around defender Milan Skriniar have had on the team.
While Inter have had some struggles in attack at the start of the current season, their real issues have come at the other end.
Three goals against Fiorentina on Saturday further highlighted how, even when the Nerazzurri win, they have some nervy defensive moments.
The trend that has been observed has been that Inter struggle to defend the spaces between the defenders, the wingbacks, and the central midfielders.
When the system functions, the players can tend to be compact and help one another out, but as Marchisio observed, they play very differently under Inzaghi than they had in the past.
“The problems have to do with the entire defensive phase,” he said.
“They have a player in Nicolo Barella who’s both attacking and defensive, but when he’s out of form, absent, or injured, it changes the whole team.”
“The defensive phase has certainly changed since the arrival of Simone Inzaghi,” he continued, “and the transfer rumours surrounding Milan Skriniar have certainly taken away some calmness from last season.”
