Former Lazio and England head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson believes that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi can guide the Nerazzurri back into the Serie A title race.

Speaking via Italian news outlet FCInterNews, Eriksson identified Inzaghi as the right man to stage a comeback in the title race, particularly with Romelu Lukaku finally back from injury.

Inter gave themselves a lot of work to do in the Scudetto chase with their poor early season form.

However, the signs over the past month have been very positive ones indeed.

Eight points to make up on Napoli at the top of the table, as well as the gap behind teams like AC Milan, Roma, Lazio, and Atalanta are still a significant hurdle for the Nerazzurri.

However, the return of Lukaku to an already in-form team could be a cause for optimism.

The coaching will also be important, and Eriksson feels that there is no doubt about Inzaghi’s credentials.

“I know Simone well, I’m fond of him and knowing that his Inter have returned to form in Italy and in Europe makes me happy,” Eriksson said.

“Their struggles at the start of the season are something that can happen,” he continued.

“But it’s possible to recover, even if there are currently a lot of teams ahead of them, and Inzaghi himself knows this from direct experience.”

“In the season that we won the Scudetto in 2000, we were at one point nine points behind,” Eriksson noted, of Inzaghi’s victory in the title race as a player with Lazio.

“This time Simone has much more time to do it, and has Lukaku back.”
