Inter centre-back Stefan De Vrij insists that the Nerazzurri are still determined to win against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, despite it counting for little.

The Netherlands international marked his return from injury to open the scoring in Inter’s 3-0 win over Sampdoria in Serie A yesterday but has already turned his attention to midweek continental action, as Simone Inzaghi’s side travel to Munich for the game on Tuesday.

Speaking to Inter TV after the win over Sampdoria at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, and as reported by FCInterNews.it, the former Lazio defender was adamant that victory over Bayern was important, despite Inter being unable to catch the Bundesliga club at the top of Group C.

“We have already achieved the goal of qualification, but it is still a very important match for us,” De Vrij stated.

“We want to do well in this last match in the Champions League group and finish it in the best possible way.”

Looking back at the win over Sampdoria, De Vrij was pleased to see Inter offering a threat from dead ball situations, and on a personal note was happy to have scored for the first time in over a year.

“We talked about it a lot, last year we scored many goals from set pieces, but not this year.

“I’m happy to be off the mark and I hope we will be able to do even more. I have missed a goal for a while, it has been a long time since I scored and it is always nice to help the team.

“I try to do as much as possible in the defensive phase like the whole team, there is still room for improvement but we are back on the right path and we have to continue.”

However, the Netherlands international urged his teammates not to become complacent and felt that there was still work to be done to shore up the defence.

“There is always something to improve, we have conceded too many goals so far, especially away.

“There is still room to improve, I’m glad we haven’t conceded any today. Lately we have seen a different spirit, with a different attitude and we have to continue like this,” he concluded.
