After making a goalscoring return in Inter’s 3-0 win over Sampdoria in Serie A yesterday, defender Stefan De Vrij revealed how the Nerazzurri had turned their form around.

The Netherlands international broke the deadlock in the first half as he headed home from a corner, marking his comeback from a calf injury with an immediate impact in the match at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

In an interview with Italian television broadcaster DAZN after the final whistle, and as reported by FCInterNews.it, De Vrij pinpointed the moment in which Inter had overcome a period of poor form to go on a run of four league wins in a row, in addition to two wins and a draw in the Champions League.

“These matches are fundamental for our path, we must win for the table because we are behind, and the approach was right, it was a very important victory,” the former Lazio centre-back claimed.

“I think the turning point was against Barcelona at home.

“We came from two league defeats and the approach was right with an opponent who held a lot of ball.

“We played an important game, we were focused and we took it home,” he added.

“The confrontation was before the match with Barcelona and it was very important. From then on we saw a different spirit and team, now it is important to continue on this path.”

After the rarity of finding the back of the net, De Vrij insisted that the clean sheet was the most important thing but wanted to dedicate his goal to his partner.

“On a personal level it’s always nice to score, but we defenders knew we had to improve and now we can see the improvements.

“I’m happy not to have conceded a goal, we want to continue like this. The goal is always good to help the team, my last in the league was against Sampdoria.

“I want to dedicate it to my fiancée who is also pregnant. I will become a father and we are very happy,” he concluded.
