Inter Captain Samir Handanovic Not Likely To Stay Past This Season As Backup Goalkeeper, Italian Media Report

Inter captain Samir Handanovic is not overly likely to stay at the Nerazzurri past the end of the current season.

This according to Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it, who report that the 38-year-old would prefer to move to a different club where he would find regular playing time rather than extending his contract to remain as the backup goalkeeper to Andre Onana at Inter.

Handanovic’s current deal with Inter is set to run out at the end of June 2023.

This does not mean that there is no chance of the Slovenian being offered an extension for at least one more season.

The captain has been displaced from the starting lineup by Onana in goal, but he remains an important figure behind the scenes and a more than reliable deputy for the Cameroonian.

From Handanovic’s perspective, however, he is not keen to settle for a backup role for any longer than the end of the current season, and would not likely accept a contract extension to remain so.
