Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries has come in for criticism in Italian media for his performance in the Netherlands’ shootout loss to Argentina in the quarterfinals of the World Cup yesterday.

The 26-year-old Nerazzurri player received a score of just 4.5/10 for his display in the player ratings for the match published in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, with his sloppy tackle to give away a penalty highlighted.

Dumfries had been the Netherlands’ decisive player in their 3-1 victory over the US in the round of sixteen of the World Cup.

However, the Dutchman was unable to same impact against Argentina.

Dumfries was kept quiet in attack by Argentina right-back Marcos Acuna, whilst this was not the worst of his battle with his opposite number.

The Inter wingback put in a clumsy tackle on Acuna in the penalty area to give away a penalty, which Lionel Messi scored for the Albiceleste’s second goal.

The Gazzetta describe this challenge as a “moment of madness” and note that it’s not the first such incident from Dumfries in the penalty area in an important match.
