Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries feels that he had his reasons for reacting during the aftermath of the Netherlands’ penalty shootout loss to Argentina in the World Cup quarterfinal.
Speaking to Dutch news outlet Voetbal International, via FCInterNews, the 26-year-old gave his thoughts after his match against the Albiceleste ended on a sour note with a straight red card for his behaviour after the shootout.
The scenes immediately following Argentina’s triumph in a penalty shootout at the end of yesterday evening’s dramatic World Cup quarterfinal were understandably emotional and chaotic.
During the commotion, Dumfries was shown a straight red card by head match official Matheu Lahoz for a confrontation with some Argentine players.
The Dutchman defended himself after the match, even if he was sorry to have been sent of.
As far as Dumfries is concerned, he had his own side of the story.
“Netherlands against Argentina is always a heated match,” he said, “you always know that there are going to be some arguments.”
“There were mutual provocations,” he claimed, “from me as well as from them.”
Dumfries noted that :I don’t like pointing fingers at other players, but I had my reasons.”
“I don’t know if it was a smart thing for me to do,” he added, “but something happened that made me react like that.”
