Inter would have little intention of extending striker Romelu Lukaku’s loan from Chelsea beyond the end of this season unless he dispenses with his persistent injury problems.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who note that the 29-year-old’s struggles for fitness now go back for almost a season and a half, and that the Nerazzurri would hardly be keen to invest another €20 million in the summer.

Lukaku has hardly been able to feature for Inter this season thanks to injuries, and it is far from clear that he will be able to do so much going forward.

Moreover, the Belgian had also dealt with a number of injuries in his single season back at Chelsea, which meant he was frequently either unavailable or in bad form.

Lukaku will be thirty at the start of next season, and between the loan fee and wages that Inter have invested this time around, he has cost them around €20 million.

The Nerazzurri would be ready to try keep hold of the Belgian past the end of the current campaign if they get some kind of indication that he will finally put his injury problems behind him and find form.

If such indications do not arrive, however, Inter would likely decline another loan deal, as it would constitute a significant investment in a player who has not shown himself to be reliable.
