Former Serie A referee Paolo Casarin feels that it is unfortunate that Inter striker Lautaro Martinez had to be booked for his exuberant celebrations after his goal against AC Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera in an interview published in yesterday’s print edition, via FCInterNews, the former official noted that it is a sad aspect of the game that sometimes a yellow card must follow such dramatic and celebratory moments in matches.

There is absolutely no question that Fabio Maresca was correct to book Inter striker Martinez following his celebrations of his goal against Milan.

Moreover, there is no doubt that the player will have been aware of what was coming when he decided to take off his shirt to go and celebrate in front of his team’s fans.

The rule that states that removing a matchday kit in celebrating a goal will result in a yellow card is no secret, but in the view of former referee Casarin, perhaps takes some of the sheen off of moments that should be all about joy and celebration.

“Lautaro scored his team’s third and then took off his shirt in the celebrations,” the former official noted.

“It’s sad how these moments of happiness have to come with such disciplinary measures.”
