Legendary former Inter defender Marco Materazzi can still remember the moment when he came on to the pitch in a mask of then-AC Milan President Silvio Berlusconi following a Milan derby.
Speaking to InterTV, via FCInterNews, the former Nerazzurri defender recalled bringing out the Berlusconi mask after a 2-0 victory over the Rossoneri in 2010 as his most memorably wild moment playing in the derby.
Materazzi played in more than his share of Milan derby matches during his time as a Nerazzurri player, although he was not on the pitch during the February 2010 edition of the match in Serie A, as Walter Samuel and Lucio were preferred at the heart of Inter’s defense.
However, this does not mean that the World Cup winner did not find a way to make an impact on the match.
The former defender famously came onto the pitch wearing a mask of then-Rossoneri President and Prime Minister of Italy Berlusconi as the Nerazzurri celebrated the win, a result that would prove crucial on the team’s iconic run to the Serie A title and the European treble.
Asked what he considered to be his craziest derby moment, Materazzi replied “Definitely wearing the Berlusconi mask.”
“I was at the supermarket, during the Carnival period, with my daughter,” he looked back, explaining the background behind that moment.
“We saw the masks they had, and among them were some of Silvio Berlusconi.”
“I said to myself, I’ll buy it and wear it if we win the derby,” Materazzi recalled.
“I have always kept my promises,” he laughed, “and so I had to keep this one too.”
“We won 2-0 and I wore it after the final whistle.”
