Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi feels that there is no question that the Nerazzurri have been disappointing this season as they’ve failed to keep up with Napoli at the top of the Serie A table.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews, Bergomi also noted that replacing Milan Skriniar as a pillar of the defense will not be an easy task for the Nerazzurri by any means.

The fact that Napoli have been close to perfect in Serie A this season is certainly a big part of the reason why they have amassed such a big lead at the top of the table.

However, Inter are not just a few points behind the league leaders, but a whopping thirteen, and it is still not even midway through February.

From Bergomi’s perspective, there is little doubt that the Nerazzurri should have done better and should be in a position to push the league leaders more based on their quality.

“Inter have been bringing home a trophy every season for three years, ” he said, “and this isn’t something that should be overlooked – winning is never simple or taken for granted, and therefore credit must be given for everyone’s work.”

“And then if we want to analyze the gap from Napoli, it’s clear that Inter could and should have done better.”

“But every season this team loses key players, they lose quality,” he added.

“And it’s not easy to get back to being competitive right away.”

“The thing that is really positive about this team is that they’re in great physical condition, the 3-5 -2 is a system that requires a great deal of energy so the squad should be reinforced with suitable and quality players.”

“But the starting point has to be keeping the big names,” Bergomi emphasized, “Barella, Brozovic, Lautaro, Calhanoglu.”

“Building around these players is necessary, especially as it will hardly be easy to replace a player of the calibre of Skriniar,” he added.
