Inter defender Stefan de Vrij makes no secret of the fact that he and the Nerazzurri are in talks regarding a possible contract extension.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia after the team’s goalless draw with Sampdoria in Serie A, via FCInterNews, the 31-year-old stated that he and his club are on very good terms as they negotiate a possible new deal that would see him stay past June.

De Vrij’s current contract with Inter is set to run out at the end of June.

Reports have suggested that the Nerazzurri are keen to keep hold of the former Lazio and Feyenoord defender, and that they have offered him a new deal.

However, it remains to be seen what the outcome of those talks will be as the player has yet to give his response.

There is also reported to be transfer interest in de Vrij, particularly from some clubs outside Serie A, although for the player’s part, he has also stated that he has a good relationship with Inter which is helping the talks move along.

Asked about the prospect of a new deal, the Dutchman acknowledged that “We’re talking about it.”

“We’re on great terms, which is very important,” he added.

Asked whether he thinks that the Nerazzurri are now officially out of the Serie A title race, de Vrij responded that “It’s very difficult for us, Napoli are flying while we can’t seem to win some matches like this evening’s.”

The defender continued that “We created chances, but we didn’t we managed to score.”

“We had many decent moves where we just missed the final ball,” he added. “It’s a shame, two points dropped.”

Asked about the mood of the team ahead of next week’s Champions League round of sixteen first leg against Porto, de Vrij said that “We’re really fired up, this is the kind match we all want to play.”

“We’re confident and we’ll do everything we can to prepare it so we can try and reach the next round,” he added.

Asked if he thought that the Nerazzurri had taken the wrong attitude in their draw against Sampdoria, de Vrij reiterated that “I think we had lots of chances to potentially score, I don’t think it’s a question of attitude but rather one of technical decisions and a bit of bad fortune.”

“We need to improve,” he concluded.
