Inter striker Lautaro Martinez hit out at the team’s performance in their 1-0 defeat to Bologna in Serie A this afternoon, arguing that a greater mentality was required.

The Nerazzurri fell to defeat at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara thanks to a second half Riccardo Orsolini goal, as they fell 18 points behind league leaders Napoli.

In an interview with Italian television broadcaster DAZN after the final whistle, and as reported by FCInterNews.it, Martinez suggested that the Nerazzurri had approached the match in the wrong manner and that they needed to show that they took all opponents seriously.

“If you don’t have motivation against these clubs you have no business being here, the Scudetto race doesn’t count, we got the approach wrong and they did better than us, that’s why we lost,” the Argentina international stated.

“Now the game with Lecce will be difficult but we have to get the three points at San Siro. To my teammates I speak in the locker room, I can only say that we will work harder to take Inter to the top.”

Martinez credited Bologna for their win but felt that Inter had not come into the match with the right frame of mind, especially after a positive week which saw them beat Udinese in Serie A and Porto in the Champions League.

“We lacked approach and even in the second half we struggled too much, we played very badly, I am disappointed with the performance, now we have to recover energy and look ahead.

“They played a great game, they were superior to us but we have to look reality in the face, we have to compact, be more of a team, work to improve every day,” the former Racing Club striker went on.

“We had a good week with the wins against Udinese and Porto, we were feeling good, we were charged up but we didn’t approach today’s game as we should have, a defeat came that we didn’t want. We have to improve a lot because Napoli are 18 points ahead now.”

Inter must now attempt to bounce back when they welcome Lecce to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Serie A next Sunday.
