Former Inter, Roma, Real Madrid, and Sampdoria forward Antonio Cassano feels that there must be a change in both the directorial role and on the bench at the Nerazzurri.
Speaking on Christian Vieri’s Twitch channel, via FCInter1908s, Cassano harshly criticized current Inter coach Simone Inzaghi for the team’s recent run of poor results, and suggested that CEO Beppe Marotta should also part ways with the club.
Cassano has never hid his criticism of Inzaghi, and in his view the 46-year-old former Lazio coach’s flaws have all been on show as the team have been inconsistent in their performances and results since the winter break.
From the perspective of the former forward, what is needed is for the team to take a risk on a coach with a different style.
For his part, Cassano also believes that Marotta should take part of the blame, and that a new perspective is needed from the former Juventus and Sampdoria executive.
“The biggest problem is the coach,” he began.
“They were able to win against Porto and Milan because the players were able to motivate themselves,” he continued.
Cassano suggested that “The coach is not up to the task of coaching a strong team to win.”
“He has numerous shortcomings, he always seems to be lacking something.”
Of the former Lazio coach, Cassano said that “He has his way of playing that he never breaks from.”
He went on that “Juve and Inter are by far the strongest teams in the league.”
“Inzaghi has the keys to a Ferrari and only gets it into second gear, Spalletti is behind the wheel of an Audi and has it going full speed.”
“Inzaghi just keeps the team going on a path to nowhere,” Cassano argued.
“He fails to motivate the team, to give them something more,” he said of the Inter coach.
“In modern football the coach has to give the team something extra.”
Cassano then stated that “Marotta should keep his mouth shut about it, he’s just talking nonsense, or June comes around and he sacks him anyway.”
“I can’t imagine he’ll win another Coppa Italia and talk about how the team are on the right track.”
He noted that “Last season he lost the title race to Milan, this season to Napoli.”
“The only thing that would change my mind would be if he brings home the Champions League,” he added. “Otherwise, get him out of there.”
“He doesn’t know how to take a top team and make them win,” Cassano argued of Inzaghi. “Conte does wherever he goes, so does Mourinho, so does Simeone.”
“Inter’s reals problems can only be traced back to the coach,” he said, “he’s the biggest problem.”
“In his first season he lost out on the title by a point, and you could say it was close, but now it’s a disaster, eighteen points behind.”
“I’m not joking, either he wins the Champions League or thank you and goodbye.”
“It’s hard to believe that this team has seven losses in Serie A already,” he continued.
“Against Sampdoria they weren’t scoring even with their hands, they drew against Monza, lost to Empoli, Bologna humiliated them.”
“If they’re out of the Champions League, Inzaghi has to go.”
Casano then noted that “There is no shortage coaches who could be brought in.”
“If Inter want to change course? De Zerbi, I’ll get on the plane to Brighton myself.”
“If he doesn’t want the move? Go ask Italiano at Fiorentina,” he continued.
“Inter don’t push to win matches, when they win it’s just because they’re the stronger team.”
Cassano argued that “Inzaghi isn’t the right coach to kick off a winning cycle.”
“If you lose out on the Serie A title by one point to Juve, that’s fine.”
“If you lose it to Milan and Napoli who have inferior squads, it’s a different story.”
“He’s not a coach who has any future at Inter,” he said of Inzaghi.
“Marotta and Inzaghi, get them the hell out of there,” Cassano was unequivocal.
“If I were president of Inter, I’d sack Marotta and Inzaghi away.”
He argued “They already took a risk with Inzaghi, why shouldn’t they take a risk with De Zerbi?”
