Former Inter goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca feels that, whilst current Nerazzurri short-stopper Andre Onana is more reliable than his teammate Samir Handanovic, he still needs to grow and improve.
Speaking at the launch of his book “Volare Libero” via FCInter1908, the former keeper gave his thoughts on the two players current playing the role at his old club.
Onana didn’t take much time to establish himself as the first-choice goalkeeper at Inter upon arriving from Ajax last summer.
Whilst it was captain Handanovic who started the season as the first-choice keeper, Onana proved himself with his performances in the Champions League and La Liga.
For his part, former keeper Pagliuca feels that the Cameroonian international becoming first-choice has been warranted by his performances, this does not mean that there is not room for even further improvement.
“Onana is a very quick goalkeeper with great reactions, in my opinion he has plenty of room for improvement, perhaps he needs to improve a bit technically, but as a goalkeeper he has great reactions,” Pagliuca said of the 26-year-old.
“It’s his first season playing in Serie A and it’s not easy, he will certainly benefit from his teammate’s experience.”
Of Handanovic, Pagliuca said that “Right now Onana is more reliable.”
“The Handanovic of a few years ago was a brilliant player,” Pagliuca continued.
“But if back then he was saving ten shots, not he’s saving seven.”
“I would consider the choice to change the first-choice keeper to be the right decision,” the former keeper added.
