Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi got his selection decisions right by starting striker Edin Dzeko and midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu against Lecce yesterday evening.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInter1908, who argue that the Nerazzurri coach’s team shape and tactics paid off.

Dzeko started alongside Lautaro Martinez in attack for Inter, despite there having been some doubt about whether the Bosnian or Romelu Lukaku would start.

The Bosnian gave the team a different kind of physical reference point compared to Lukaku, and more importantly, was willing to regularly drop back and give the team an extra option in midfield.

Along with the presence of Calhanoglu’s running and passing at the base of midfield, this meant that the Nerazzurri never looked overrun in midfield.

In the view of La Repubblica, Inzaghi was very much vindicated in his decision to start the pair rather than Lukaku and Marcelo Brozovic.
