Former Inter coach Andrea Stramaccioni has revealed that he had tried to sign then-Atalanta midfielder Giacomo Bonaventura to the Nerazzurri whilst he was in charge.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster RadioFirenzeViola, via FCInterNews, the former coach noted that the 33-year-old Fiorentina midfielder had been aware of his interest at the time.
Bonaventura had made himself a target for a number of big Italian clubs with his performances for Atalanta over the first half of last decade.
In the end, it was Inter’s city rivals AC Milan who signed the midfielder, bringing him in during the summer of 2014.
Now, Bonaventura plays for Fiorentina, having joined the Tuscans from the Rossoneri during the summer of 2020 after six years in Milan.
However, he could well have been playing for the Nerazzurri all along.
Stramaccioni looked back on Bonaventura when the midfielder had still been playing for Atalanta last decade, with the former coach noting that “I wanted to sign him at Inter but nothing came of it.”
“He was aware of my interest,” the coach added.
