Legendary former Inter President Massimo Moratti feels that whilst the form of Napoli would make catching the league leaders difficult, the Nerazzurri still must face some criticism for their form in the league.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Telelombardia, via FCInterNews, the former President gave his thoughts on the Nerazzurri’s form in Serie A in particular, giving the view that they have not been at a high enough level.

Inter came into the season among the primary favourites to win the Serie A title, with perhaps defending champions AC Milan and Juventus seen at the same level and then teams like Napoli and Roma behind them.

Accordingly, the fact that it has been the Partneopei who have been absolutely head and shoulders ahead of all of their rivals at the top end of the table has come as something of a surprise.

Part of this has simply come down to the remarkable form shown by Luciano Spalletti’s team, although the fact that Inter in particular haven’t been able to keep pace has also been notable.

“We started out the season with much greater ambitions than have proven to be the reality today,” Moratti noted.

“Napoli have been incredibly strong, but when you’re fifteen points off the top it doesn’t really seem right to say that you’ve given your best in the league,” he continued.

“One of the negatives has been the absence of Lukaku, who would have given a lot to the team had he been fit, there are no shortage of excuses.”

“And then the situation with Skriniar has also perhaps created some issues for the team.”

Asked which player has surprised him the most this season, Moratti named “Lautaro, without question.”

“He’s doing incredibly well both as a centre-forward and also as a captain, he’s showing the right attitude,” the former President noted.

He also noted that “Calhanoglu is playing well in midfield.”
