Current Inter Primavera coach Christian Chivu would be the favourite to take over the Nerazzurri’s senior team if Simone Inzaghi is sacked.
This according to Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it, who report that the 42-year-old former Nerazzurri, Roma, and Ajax defender is the main candidate to take over as caretaker boss, ahead of the likes of club legends Esteban Cambiasso and Walter Zenga.
Inzaghi’s grip on the Inter job is looking more and more tenuous, with yesterday’s loss to Fiorentina in Serie A close to being the final straw.
Whilst the Nerazzurri will not sack Inzaghi with immediate effect, the former Lazio coach likely only has the next three matches to save his job, with massive matches in the league, the Coppa Italia, and the Champions league on the way.
Should the 46-year-old not be able to turn things around following three consecutive league defeats, the Gazzetta report that Inter would be prepared to part ways between the two legs of the Champions League quarterfinal tie against Benfica.
The aim of this would be to produce a reaction from the team and save whatever there is to be saved of the season.
A caretaker coach would be sought to replace Inzaghi, rather than a longer-term replacement, as top targets like Brighton and Hove Albion’s Roberto De Zerbi would hardly be attainable at this stage of the season and would have to wait until the summer.
According to the Gazzetta, former players like legendary former midfielder Cambiasso and former goalkeeper and captain Zenga would have little interest in taking over on a caretaker basis.
However, Treble-winning former defender Chivu is already at the club, where he coaches the Primavera team.
According to the Gazzetta, the Romanian would be the main candidate to be promoted to being first team boss until the end of the campaign if Inzaghi is to be shown the exit door.
