Inter’s directors held an emergency meeting with coach Simone Inzaghi late last night, following yet another damaging defeat in Serie A, this time at the hands of Monza.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Nerazzurri directors felt that the discussions could not wait as the situation gets critical after four losses in the last five Serie A clashes.
Given the vital importance of finishing in the top four of the Serie A to secure Champions League group stage participation next season, and the revenues that come with it, the last month of results in the league have been nothing less than a calamity for Inter.
Even three points against Monza yesterday would have only kept the team barely above water given the damage that had been done by three consecutive losses and then a draw away to Salernitana.
Therefore, slumping to another loss means that the Nerazzurri’s hopes of finishing in the top four are hanging on by a thread.
There may be eight matches left to be played, but the ground to be made up on AC Milan, Roma, and Lazio (the latter now ten points clear of Inter) looks like it’s going to be a big ask.
It’s for this reason that the directors felt that it was necessary to immediately react to yesterday evening’s loss by holding an emergency meeting.
At this point, with the team looking motivated and sharp in the Champions League but seemingly unable to grasp what it is that they need to do in the league, Simone Inzaghi is closer to being sacked than he has at any point before during his tenure as Nerazzurri coach.
Speaking to the 47-year-old after yesterday evening’s loss, the directors impressed upon him the severity of the situation.
