Inter coach Simone Inzaghi could be given a lifeline to save his future at the club in the event that he wins the Coppa Italia.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the coach doesn’t currently look likely to stay beyond the end of the current season, but that all hope is not lost for him.

There is no disguising the fact that Inter’s form in the league has been very subpar this season, with eleven defeats in Serie A so far considered completely untenable.

If the Nerazzurri were to be unable to claw their way back into a top four spot in the league then the decision would likely be taken to sack Inzaghi in the summer in response to these results, despite the 47-year-old still having a season left to run on his contract.

On the other hand, if Inzaghi can get the team back into a spot directly qualifying for the Champions League with a big final flourish, he could have a chance, and then the team’s performance in the cup competitions would become key.

In this sense, Inter have looked stronger in the knockout cup competitions than they have in the league all season, but without top four this would not likely be enough to save Inzaghi.

On the other hand, if the former Lazio can guide Inter to a top four spot in the Serie A table along with winning the Coppa Italia and reaching the Champions League, then his work overall could be deemed as adequate.

In this case, Inzaghi would be taking quite an unorthodox path of barely scraping by in the league whilst being absolutely stellar in the knockout competitions.

However, in truth this has been the story of the coach’s time at Inter to date, and if he can make it work in the final weeks of the campaign he could be entrusted to be in charge at the end of next campaign.
