Inter Milan CEO Beppe Marotta insists that his club must maintain a cautious financial approach despite earning hefty sums in the shape of Champions League prize money.

The 66-year-old chatted with the press ahead of Inter’s much-anticipated battle against AC Milan in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal.

Aside from all the prestige and glamour, playing in the advanced stages of Europe’s elite club competition provides lucrative amounts of cash, which will definitely come in handy for the Nerazzurri amidst their current financial struggles.

But while some fans are hoping that the club’s Champions League exploits get followed by a spectacular summer transfer campaign, Marotta’s statements might curb their enthusiasm.

The Inter Milan CEO reckons the importance of maintaining financial sustainability rather than making hasty decisions on the market.

“We must remain financially sustainable. This extra budget alleviates the negative balance and the previous losses,” said Marotta in his pre-match interview with Sky Sport via FcInterNews.

“We must not forget that there are also sporting values that we must adopt. Surely this little treasure makes us feel more comfortable, but planning must not depend only on this journey in the Champions League which has been extraordinary in any case.”

Marotta had already reached two Champions League finals during his time at Juventus, but he admits that this European campaign is a special one for him.

“I’m a person who keeps emotions on the inside, but I’m experiencing something unique.

“I’ve made the semi-finals of the Champions League before, but making it at Inter Milan and with a derby is great for Italian football. I’m truly enjoying it.
