Coach Simone Inzaghi has turned it around at Inter Milan following a rollercoaster season.

As today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport highlight, via FCInterNews, the 47-year-old has gotten a number of important decisions right with respect to his squad in order to do so.

At the start of the season, the balance looked off for Inter. The team looked to play a fast-paced, high-pressing style of play, but this led to being too defensively open.

A leaky defense and some early setbacks in Serie A convinced Inzaghi to make some tweaks.

Simone Inzaghi Makes Changes To Inter Milan Starting XI

The first big change that Inzaghi made to Inter’s starting eleven was giving goalkeeper Andre Onana his shot.

The Cameroonian arrived last season from Ajax, but was not immediately made first-choice in goal. Rather, captain Samir Handanovic kept his place.

However, after a few questionable moments from the Slovenian, Inzaghi took action. Starting from October, Onana has been the first-choice keeper in all competitions for the Nerazzurri.

The 27-year-old has rewarded Inzaghi’s faith, particularly in the Champions League.

Then, there is Francesco Acerbi in defense. The 35-year-old arrived on loan from Lazio during the summer transfer window.

Whilst many had seen Acerbi as an underwhelming, unambitious piece of business from Inter, coach Inzaghi always wanted him.

It didn’t take long for the coach to make Acerbi an integral part of his team. This has proved a very canny decision, and has given the Nerazzurri enormous defensive solidity.

Lastly, Inzaghi turned to Hakan Calhanoglu as Inter’s regista whilst Marcelo Brozovic was out injured starting from October.

Whilst this initially looked like an emergency stopgap solution, Calhanoglu has become a key player in a deeper role for the Nerazzurri.

Squad Rotation Also Key For Inzaghi At Inter Milan

Just as important for the coach as the starting eleven has been squad rotation.

Whilst the new-look starting eleven got results in the fall and early winter, a crash in form came in the spring.

Inzaghi found a way to react. The coach has extensively rotated his team throughout their busiest period of the schedule.

The result has been that Inter always seem to have an advantage in freshness over their opposition. Moreover, there has always been room for players to make a major contribution from the bench.
