Steven Zhang can become the third-most successful President in Inter Milan’s history if the Nerazzurri win the Coppa Italia tonight.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who note that if the Nerazzurri beat Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico they’ll win their fifth trophy under Zhang, declaring that “This is the Inter he dreamed of.”

It has not all been smooth sailing for Inter under Zhang’s Presidency.

Most notably, ongoing financial issues have arisen under Suning’s ownership following the start of the pandemic.

However, in recent seasons, the President has guided the Nerazzurri to a number of trophies.

This cycle began in the 2020-21 season. On that occasion, Inter broke Juventus’s sequence of nine straight Serie A title wins to win the Scudetto for themselves.

Then, last time around, Inter won both the Supercoppa Italiana and the Coppa Italia.

This season, the Nerazzurri can win both domestic cups yet again. They are one match against Fiorentina away from doing so.

Zhang Could Win Fifth Trophy At Inter With Fiorentina Win

A fifth trophy would mean that Zhang has won more than all but two former Inter Presidents who came before him.

At the top of the pile is Massimo Moratti. If the five titles won whilst Giacinto Facchetti was technically President are counted, Moratti won a total of sixteen.

Clearly, Moratti’s lead in that regard looks virtually unassailable.

However, the same is not necessarily the case with Moratti’s father Angelo. The elder Moratti won a total of seven trophies whilst at the helm of Inter.

The Gazzetta note that Zhang has taken some risks to get here.

Most notably, the President decided to keep Milan Skriniar last summer, rejecting big offers from Paris Saint-Germain.

Considering the Slovakian is set to leave for nothing, that decision looks to have backfired. Inter have missed out on vital transfer market revenue, and will lose a key player.

However, the Gazzetta suggest, keeping Skirniar is indicative of the boldness of Zhang’s strategy.
