Samir Handanovic could extend his contract with Inter Milan as the goalkeeping position at the club is in flux.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Nerazzurri could agree a new deal with their captain to provide some stability with Andre Onana and Alex Cordaz’s futures looking uncertain.

At the moment, Handanovic is not under contract with Inter.

The 38-year-old, who signed a one-year extension last summer, saw his deal expire at the end of last month.

This does not necessarily mean that Handanovic will leave Inter this summer, however. The Slovenian hasn’t made a decision on his future one way or the other.

And Handanovic’s decision could rest on what happens with the other goalkeepers at Inter.

Samir Handanovic Could Stay At Inter Milan To Provide Stability

The future of Onana is one of the big questions of Inter’s summer transfer window yet to be answered.

Premier League giants Manchester United want the 27-year-old. And, if they make the offer, the sense is that Inter will certainly accept it.

Should Onana head to Old Trafford, the Nerazzurri will sign a like-for-like replacement. They are seeking a younger profile in this sense.

Shakhtar Donetsk’s Anatoliy Trubin, Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi, and Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili are all on Inter’s radar.

And on the other hand, Inter’s third-choice goalkeeper Alex Cordaz could reportedly follow Marcelo Brozovic to Al-Nassr.

These developments could leave Inter having to make two goalkeeping signings – a first-choice keeper, and a new third-choice stalwart.

In this case, the Nerazzurri will hardly want to big goodbye to their captain Handanovic. Having to replace the entire complement of three goalkeepers would be a massive undertaking.

Thusly, Handanovic could decide to say.

The 38-year-old would provide some semblance of stability whilst a replacement for Onana settles in.
