Inter Milan have brought the average age of their squad down significantly with three departures and three arrivals.
This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, who note how the departures of three veterans and their replacement by three younger players has significantly changed the age composition of the Nerazzurri’s squad.
It always looked likely that Inter would try and lower the average age of their squad during this summer transfer window.
Last season, the Nerazzurri’s squad had the highest average age in all of Serie A. In fact, the Nerazzurri’s squad had an average age of nearly thirty, and was only getting older as the campaign went on.
Whilst this was not a problem for Inter as they reached the Champions League final, it was certainly not sustainable for the future.
Now, the squad surgery is well and truly underway. And the profiles of the players who have replaced some mainstays of the team gives a clear indication of Inter’s strategy.
Frattesi Replacing Brozovic Not The Only Younger Signing For New-Look Inter
Perhaps the most high-profile swap within Inter’s squad has been Marcelo Brozovic’s departure to Al-Nassr and Davide Frattesi’s arrival top take his place.
Brozovic is currently thirty. The Croat’s age may not have been an immediate problem.
However, particularly given that Brozovic had two long muscle injuries last season, questions were emerging. The sense was that more good performances were behind the 30-year-old than ahead of him.
Frattesi, on the other hand, only turns 24 next season.
The Italian international has already marked himself as a top talent at Sassuolo. However, there is every reason to believe that he will improve, or at least stay at the same level, for quite a few years to come.
Meanwhile, 34-year-old Danilo D’Ambrosio has left Inter on a free transfer.
Over the past few seasons, the veteran defender was a stalwart in the squad who added depth in defense.
Whilst D’Ambrosio had used his experience and leadership to bolster the defensive ranks, the Nerazzurri’s idea for a depth signing to take his place is going in a much different direction.
Germany Under-21 international Yann Bisseck is a player who may not yet be the finished article. At 22, Inter won’t expect Bisseck to come in as a first-choice starter right away.
However, the Nerazzurri are backing the 22-year-old’s potential in the backup role rather than going with a veteran.
Edin Dzeko is the oldest player to leave Inter this summer. At 37, the Bosnian is already still playing at a high level longer than most players ever do.
However, Inter took Dzeko’s departure as a trigger to make a free transfer signing at the other end of their career.
Arriving in Dzeko’s place is 25-year-old ex-Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram.
