Marotta On What Luis Suarez Meant To Inter
Inter CEO Marotta said that Suarez’s arrival at Inter in 1961 was “A huge coup, and a great signing.”
“He was a very important player for Helenio Herrera’s Inter, who as you’ll recall won two European Cups.”
“I was able to them beat Benfica at the San Siro as a child,” Marotta continued. “I believe it was in May of 1965.”
“I watched that team emerge victorious against Benfica.”
“They were a team that I always admired as a child,” Marotta looked back. “And I always had a relationship of great friendship with Luis. Particularly as a coach”
“His loss is a great one, especially for the values he represents.”
Marotta said of Suarez that “He represents a romantic idea of football. He loves Inter, and he was with us until a few years ago, he was part of the organization for as long as he could be.”
“He reminds me of Pirlo, particularly in terms of their personal qualities.”
“From a footballing point of view, I think the resemblance to Pirlo is a reference points.”
Marotta noted that “I had the opportunity to see that Inter and I remember he had a Pirlo-style long ball, something that was new to football at that time.”
“It was a bit of an innovation, but above all he was the metronome of that Inter,” the Nerazzurri CEO said of Suarez. “He wrote pages of football history not only for the Nerazzurri but for all of Italy and Europe.”
