Legendary former AC Milan and Sampdoria midfielder Giovanni Lodetti remembers Inter Milan legend Luis Suarez as a “gentleman.”
Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews, the Rossoneri great recalled his time playing for the Blucerchiati together with Suarez, also stating that the Spaniard can be an “exmple for youngsters.”
Yesterday, former Inter, Barcelona, and Sampdoria midfielder Suarez passed away.
In the form of the Spaniard, football loses one of its iconic players.
Suarez had been one of the central figures of the great “Grande Inter” team of the 1960s. He played a crucial role in the Nerazzurri winning the European Cup twice under Helenio Herrera.
Suarez was a massively significant figure in the history of Inter. The former midfielder also had a big impact and lasting legacy with Barcelona and Spain.
However, it was not with the Nerazzurri or the Blaugranas that Suarez concluded his playing career.
Rather, the Spaniard joined Sampdoria in 1970. He did so along with former Milan midfielder Lodetti.
Both of the pair had won two European Cups in the previous decade, playing on opposite sides of the San Siro.
And both hung up their boots after a few seasons spent playing for the Blucerchiati.

“He was a gentleman,” former midfielder Lodetti looked back. “And he can be an example for youngsters.”
The former teammate of Suarez added that “Even though many people thought that he deserved to be at a bigger team, he always gave his all.”
“He’d played for Inter and Barcelona, but he always gave his all for the Sampdoria shirt.”
“I haven’t seen many players who were like him.”
After joining the Blucerchiati 1970, Suarez stayed for three seasons until 1973 when he hung up his boots. Meanwhile, Lodetti spent an additional season playing for Sampdoria retiring in 1974.
