Inter Milan legend Alessandro Altobelli says Romelu Lukaku cheated on himself following the recent controversial episode.

The Nerazzurri were working on securing a deal with Chelsea to keep the 30-year-old at Appiano Gentile. The latter spent the previous campaign on loan at Inter.

Nonetheless, it later emerged that the striker and his lawyer were secretly negotiating with Juventus for more than a month. This prompted the Beneamata to halt all negotiations.

For his part, club legend Alessandro Altobelli believes that Lukaku has made a grave mistake by simultaneously negotiating with both clubs.

However, “Spillo” also blames the management for biding their time before closing the deal.

“He cheated on himself! I think he made a lot of mistakes. He won’t go to Inter anymore. But now it’s the fans who don’t want him anymore,” said the 67-year-old in an interview with Tuttosport via FcInterNews.

“He helped in reuniting the environment against him. You have the right to make all the choices you want. But if you talk to Inter, you don’t talk to Juventus at the same time.

“This shows a lack of respect for the team you were in until June.

“Then, in my opinion, the club too could have acted differently. They should have come to an agreement sooner if they wanted to keep him instead of waiting till the last moment.”

Altobelli himself once made the switch to Juventus following a long spell at Inter. He joined the Bianconeri following an 11-year collaboration with the Nerazzurri.

However, the 1982 World Cup winner reveals how he had very few options at the time.

“Although I still had a contract for another year, Inter put me in a position to leave. I tore up that contract. I gave up more than a billion lire.

“I played in the 1988 European Championship and [former Juventus president Giampiero] Boniperti called me.

“I only received that offer. If I hadn’t said yes, I wouldn’t have been able to play.”
