Simone Inzaghi is aiming to hit the record for matches managed at Inter Milan that Roberto Mancini achieved.

This is highlighted by Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it, who note that whilst the 47-year-old is still a long way off from the current Italy coach, he has already surpassed the likes of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

In the twenty-first century, no coach has taken charge of as many Inter matches as Mancini.

The experienced Italian coach, who is currently in charge of the Italian national team in addition to having had spells on the bench at Lazio, Manchester City, and Galatasaray, was on the bench for a whopping 303 Nerazzurri matches.

These came across two different spells as Inter coach – between 2004 and 2008, and 2014 and 2016.

In a position that is notorious for chewing coaches up and spitting them out, that is certainly an impressive record. Mancini was a coach who brought stability and consistency to the legendarily volatile “pazza” Inter atmosphere.

Inzaghi is hoping that he can achieve something similar. And if he can do so, he may well hold out hope of reaching Mancini’s imperious record for matches coached.

Inzaghi Has Already Overtaken Conte & Mourinho – Now Targeting Mancini

If Inzaghi really does want to overtake Mancini, he’ll know that he still must stay in post for quite a while longer.

So far, the former Lazio coach has been on the bench for a total of 109 matches. This is hardly anything to sneeze at, but barely a third of Mancini’s total.

However, Inzaghi can take heart from the fact that he has already surpassed two of the Nerazzurri’s other most successful recent coaches.

One is Antonio Conte, who was in charge for a grand total of 102 matches.

Conte was in charge of Inter for two seasons, the same number as Inzaghi has been to date.

However, whilst Conte’s imperious domestic form is something Inzaghi has yet to capture, he was nowhere near as successful in knockout competitions, meaning fewer total matches over the same amount of time.

Meanwhile Mourinho took charge of 108 total Inter matches.

The Portuguese, like Conte, spent two seasons on the bench at the Nerazzurri.

Mourinho reached the Champions League final in his second season like Inzaghi did. However, the current Roma boss actually went all the way and won the competition.
