Former Inter Milan CEO Ernesto Paolillo feels that the Nerazzurri haven’t necessarily headed into the season with adequate squad depth.

Speaking to Italian news outlet L’Interista, Paolillo particularly highlighted what he sees as a lack of a real backup to midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu as an issue that remains even after the end of the summer transfer window.

Certainly no one could accuse Inter of not doing business during the summer transfer window.

The Nerazzurri made a total of twelve signings, in addition to bringing Stefano Sensi back.

Naturally, these new arrivals replace outgoing players. There were some very big name departures, particularly those of Andre Onana, Edin Dzeko, and Marcelo Brozovic.

One way or another, Inter have taken the chance to shake up their squad.

There are a dozen new players available to Simone Inzaghi. These come all over the pitch.

All of these new signings can point to a gradual, or abrupt, change in the Nerrazzurri’s style of play.

However, in the view of former Inter CEO Paolillo, the club have still left some holes in the squad.

Paolillo: Still Holes In This Inter Milan Team, No Backup To Hakan Calhanoglu

Asked about how he’s rate the transfer window as a whole for Inter, Paolillo argyed “Based on the quality and competitiveness of the players they brought in, they could have done better.”

“But still, the team as a whole gets a 7/10,” he continued.

Paolillo argued that “They’re still missing a top defender and a top midfielder.”

“Above all, it’s a regret the way in which they lost a player like Lukaku,” the former executive observed.

Paolillo feels that “The team still lack a midfielder.”

“Not because of the people who made the signings,” he added. “But just because the club lacks financial resources.”

He argued that “In particularly, there’s a lack of a player who can back up Calhanoglu. Someone of the same quality.”

“Hakan is very good, but if anything happens to him, I don’t see anyone capable of filling his position just as well.”
