The fitness of AC Milan striker Olivier Giroud is a doubt ahead of the upcoming Milan derby against Inter Milan.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who update regarding the Frenchman’s fitness for the derby clash after the international break.

Giroud, who is France’s all-time leading goalscorer, started for Les Bleus against Ireland on Thursday evening.

However, the 36-year-old had to come off as a substitute during the first half of the match.

Inter striker Marcus Thuram replaced Giroud in the 26th minute of the EURO 2024 qualifying match. The Nerazzurri man went on to score France’s second goal of the match.

The reason that Giroud had to come off was that he was experiencing some pain in his ankle.

And the French medical team conducted tests to see what the problem was.

According to the Corriere, the prognosis for Giroud is a mild sprain. There was no serious injury detected by the tests, but the striker’s fitness for next Saturday’s derby match is still a question mark.

AC Milan Striker Olivier Giroud A Fitness Doubt For Derby Clash Vs Inter Milan

According to the Corriere, Giroud will return to training with the Milan squad by Thursday.

The striker could even train with the Rossoneri squad as early as Wednesday next week.

These sessions in the couple of days leading up to the derby should be crucial in determining whether Giroud will be ready for the derby, which is Milan’s first match back from the break.

On Tuesday of next week, Giroud should get back on the training pitch individually.

There, the Frenchman will attempt to run and put weight on his ankle. This could go a long way to pointing to whether or not he will be fit to play against Inter.

If Giroud cannot play in the derby, then the Gazzetta report that summer signing Luka Jovic will be ready to start.
