From a new goalkeeper in Yann Sommer to big changes in attack, there are several “unknowns” in Inter Milan’s Serie A title pursuit.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
So far this season, Inter look like a team capable of going after the Serie A title.
The Nerazzurri have played three, won three, scored eight, and conceded none.
The Milan derby next weekend will of course be Inter’s biggest test. But for now at least, there is every reason to see them among the favourites for the title.
So far, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has largely relied on key players from last season.
The likes of Davide Frattesi, Juan Cuadrado, and Marko Arnautovic have made cameo appearances from the bench. And a lot is certainly expected from defender Benjamin Pavard after his move from Bayern Munich.
But the players who have gotten the job done have largely been players who were at Inter three or four months ago.
Still, there have been a couple exceptions.
Sommer & New-Look Attack “Unknowns” For Inter Milan In Serie A Title Pursuit
One summer signing who has played every minute of Inter’s Serie A campaign to date is keeper Yann Sommer.
Inzaghi has little option but to throw the 34-year-old Swiss international straight into the deep end. Every senior goalkeeper who was at the club last season left during the summer.
And so far, Sommer couldn’t have asked for a better start.
Inter have kept three clean sheets, with Sommer making a few excellent saves in the process.
But that’s hardly enough for the Swiss to convince that he’ll truly be a worthy heir to Andre Onana in goal. Particularly when comparing the two keepers’ ability with the ball at their feet – that was always Onana’s greatest strength.
Goalkeeper is a vital position for any team with title aspirations. And in the view of the Corriere, it is still a position with a big question mark around it for Inter.
Meanwhile, in attack, summer signing Marcus Thuram has started all three of Inter’s Serie A matches to date.
Thuram has notched a goal and assist so far. Broadly speaking, his start to the campaign has been very positive.
But there are still “unknowns” in the view of the Corriere.
Last season, Edin Dzeko and Romelu Lukaku powered Inter’s attack along with Lautaro Martinez. Both were reliable goalscorers in Serie A, as well as big physical presences in attack.
After three matches it’s still not easy to say whether Thuram, Arnautovic, and Alexis Sanchez will be able to fully replace what the former strikers had contributed.
The question, for both Sommer and the new strikers, is not one that three matches can answer.
For the Serie A title, the question is whether these new arrivals can perform at the requisite level over a long and gruelling season.
