Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez is in the midst of a ten-match goal drought for Argentina despite scoring freely for his club.
This is highlighted by Argentine broadcaster TyC Sports, via FCInterNews, who note that the 26-year-old has now gone a whopping 484 minutes without finding the back of the net wearing his national team’s shirt.
For Inter, Martinez is far and away the main outlet for goals.
The Argentine has been the Nerazzurri’s top scorer in each of the last two seasons.
And that certainly looks like a trend that will continue this time around. The 26-year-old has found the back of the net a whopping five times in just three matches so far in Serie A.
Certainly no one would question Martinez’s capacity as a goalscorer in an Inter shirt.
But with Argentine, it’s been a completely different story in recent matches.
Lautaro Martinez Goal Drought For Argentina Extends To Tend Matches
Martinez was in the Albiceleste’s starting eleven for their 1-0 World Cup qualifying win over Ecuador.
However, the Inter striker was not able to get himself on the scoresheet in that match.
In fact, the winning goal from Lionel Messi came just moments after Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez replaced Martinez.
This was the tenth appearance that Martinez has made for Argentina without managing to find the back of the net.
The 26-year-old had played in every single one of the Albiceleste’s matches at the World Cup in Qatar. He started the first two matches in the group stage, and then came on as a substitute from then on.
However, Martinez did not score or assist a single goal in Qatar.
It is true that Martinez has, here and there, suffered goal droughts for Inter. He has gone several matches without scoring for his club side.
But a ten-goal drought is something quite different, and contrasts markedly from the Argentine’s club form.
