The title race could be shaping up to be a two-team affair between Inter Milan and Juventus in Serie A.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Four matches is, of course, still very early on in a long and gruelling Serie A season.
But it is enough time to assess the credentials of the main contenders for the title, the Gazzetta suggests.
And for the newspaper, two teams look to be top of the pile – the rest have fallen short.
There’s AC Milan, who looked like potential title challengers based on their first three matches of the season. However, the Rossoneri’s perfect start came to a screeching halt in the form of a 5-1 loss to Inter in the derby over the weekend.
Meanwhile, Roma have finally announced themselves, with a 7-0 demolition job on Empoli.
But the Giallorossi had taken just one point prior to that statement win. This leaves them with a lot of catching up to do already, and questions about whether they can muster the consistency to do it.
Last season’s champions Napoli have won two, drawn one, and lost one. The feeling is that the change in coach from Luciano Spalletti to Rudi Garcia has changed the balance of the team, weakening them.
And the runners-up from last season, Lazio, have taken just three points.
That came in an impressive win away to Napoli, to be sure. But like with their city rivals Roma, the consistency isn’t there.
Then, if a team like Atalanta or Fiorentina is to mark themselves out as a dark horse for the Scudetto, they haven’t done so yet.
Inter Milan & Juventus Two Early Favourites In Serie A
Inter have sent an early message that they could be the team to beat in the Italian top flight.
The Nerazzurri won all three of their matches before the international break, against Monza, Cagliari, and Fiorentina.
The fact that the victory over La Viola came via a 4-0 scoreline was just as important as getting three points for Inter.
Then in the derby, the Nerazzurri decimated city rivals the Rossoneri. That virtually ended early discussions that the title race could come down to a “Milan derby.”
Instead, the Gazzetta suggest, it could be a “Derby d’Italia” for the Serie A title.
Juventus began the season by taking seven points from nine.
Routine wins against Udinese and Empoli bookended a 1-1 draw against Bologna.
But it was the Bianconeri’s 3-1 win over Lazio over the weekend that really established their Scudetto credentials.
Max Allegri’s team looked to have a strong organization, physicality, and a balance between defense and attack.
Juventus may not have gotten off to the kind of scorched-earth start that Inter have in Serie A. But they are just two points behind the Nerazzurri.
For the Gazzetta, if any team is going to push Inter all the way, it is the Bianconeri.
